Apply for the Innovation Fund until April 23

Innovation fund

Are you looking to finance industrial assets (infrastructure, processes, factories) focused on the deployment of low-carbon technologies? Can your assets reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but are they located in a place that is difficult to decarbonize?

We are pleased to share some information that we believe is important for your financing.

Today, the European Innovation Fund is one of the key sources of financing for your project. This fund, managed by the European Commission, is financed by revenues from the Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

The fund selects industrial project proposals based on quantified evidence of their climate commitments and their potential for replication in Europe.

1. Why is the Innovation Fund important?

The Innovation Fund is an important fund because it acts as a “public risk taker.” It provides access to substantial financing that was previously unavailable to individual companies.

2. Which companies can submit their application to the Innovation Fund?

The range of companies eligible to apply is broad.

You can participate as long as you are based in a country within the European Union or in an EEA country participating in the EU ETS (European Union Emissions Trading System) and can demonstrate a significant reduction in your emissions over ten years with figures.

Here is the list of eligible sectors:

  • Renewable hydrogen and derivatives.
  • Advanced renewable energies and energy storage.
  • Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
  • Energy-intensive industries: steel, cement, chemicals, glass, paper.
  • Low-carbon industrial heat technologies.
  • Sustainable fuels for industry and heavy-duty mobility.

3. Which assets will be financed by the fund?

The Innovation Fund covers up to 60% of additional costs related to innovation.

  • Expenses necessary to achieve initial commercial deployment.
  • Industrial investments (CAPEX).
  • Costs related to technological innovation.
  • Engineering, integration, and scaling.

4. What are the criteria for evaluating applications funded by the Innovation Fund?

The independent experts will be neutral on technology and geography, and will examine five key areas:

  • The industrial technological innovation of the project.
  • The cost-effectiveness of the subsidy.
  • The potential for replication in Europe.
  • The progress of the project in terms of engineering.
  • The impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions over ten years.

5. How long can we expect to wait for financing?

The cycle is quite long, lasting between 12 and 18 months.

There are different stages:

  • Call for innovation opens at the end of the year.
  • Closing of applications in the spring.
  • Evaluation over several months.
  • Drafting of results in the fall.
  • Signing of agreements the following year.
